There’s nothing better than that fresh color feeling—the moment you leave the salon with beautiful hair color that feels vibrant, rich, and flawless. Whether you’re rocking a bold new shade, subtle highlights, or a classic color refresh, I want you to love your look not just on the day you leave my salon here in West Columbia, but every day in between.
One of the most common questions I get from guests (whether they’re coming from right here in town or over from Lexington) is how to make their color last longer. So, I thought I’d pull together my best hair stylist advice to help you keep your color looking its best.
Here’s the real secret: It’s not just what happens in the salon—it’s how you care for your color afterward.
Why Professional Color Matters
First things first, I always recommend having your color done by a professional. There’s a reason I don’t use box dyes in my salon. Professional color products are formulated with better ingredients, customized for your specific hair type, and applied with the proper technique to ensure even, long-lasting results.
Box dyes might seem convenient and affordable, but they can be unpredictable and damaging. I’ve seen too many guests come in needing serious hair repair after an at-home color job gone wrong. Plus, once your color is professionally done, you’re setting yourself up for healthier, more manageable hair in the long run.
5 Tips to Make Your Color Last
Once you’ve got that fresh color, the next step is keeping it looking salon-perfect. Here are the five things I always recommend:
1. Wait Before You Wash
After your color appointment, try to wait at least 48 hours before washing your hair. This gives your hair cuticle time to fully close and lock in that gorgeous color.
The longer you can go between washes, the better. I tell my guests to aim for shampooing no more than two or three times a week to help preserve the color and natural oils that keep your hair healthy.
2. Use Color-Safe Products
Not all shampoos and conditioners are created equal. Make sure you’re using products labeled as color-safe and sulfate-free. Sulfates are harsh detergents that can strip away your color faster than you’d think.
I always have a few of my favorite color-protecting shampoos and conditioners available at the salon. If you’re unsure what’s best for your hair, just ask me—I’m happy to recommend something tailored to your hair’s needs.
3. Protect Your Hair from Heat and Sun
Heat styling and sun exposure can fade your color quickly. Always use a heat protectant spray when blow-drying, curling, or straightening your hair. And when you’re spending time outside, consider wearing a hat or using a UV-protectant hair product.
It might sound like a small thing, but protecting your hair from the elements can make a huge difference in how long your striking hair colors stay fresh.
4. Deep Condition Regularly
Color-treated hair needs extra moisture to stay soft and vibrant. I recommend using a deep conditioning mask once a week to help nourish and strengthen your hair.
I also offer an in-salon hair repair treatment that’s perfect for guests who want to restore moisture and shine after a big color transformation.
5. Book Regular Gloss Appointments
One of the best-kept secrets to maintaining that fresh color look is a gloss treatment. Glosses help boost shine, refresh your color, and tone down any fading or brassiness in between full-color services.
Many of my guests from Lexington and West Columbia schedule a quick gloss appointment about halfway between their regular color appointments to keep their hair looking vibrant.
Final Thoughts
At the end of the day, your color is an investment—something you wear every single day. A little extra care can go a long way toward keeping it vibrant, healthy, and beautiful.
If you ever have questions about your color routine, need product recommendations, or want to schedule a gloss or hair repair service, just let me know next time you’re in my chair. Whether you’re from West Columbia or Lexington, I’m always here to help you feel confident and love your hair.
